Instructions

This installation was created bearing in mind the effect Covid-19 has had on how people have interacted and related to each other. How do you now perceive and meet people, and what characteristics do you assess? In a time when it has become increasingly more common to rely on apps which ask us foremost to judge based on appearance and which often result in endless small talk, how do you foster a sense of meaningful connection, even if just for a few minutes?

As the creative intent behind this installation was born from a desire for strangers with few assumptions about each other to be able to safely connect and share stories, please feel free to not immediately divulge demographic information (such as age, race, gender, etc. though understandably, it may work its way into your responses).

consent

On the next page, you will be asked to provide your consent to participate in this installation.

storytelling

You will then be prompted to call (or message, if required for accessibility) the person in the other booth using Skype, and you will be shown a number of narrative questions. If you do not feel comfortable answering a question, you may scroll down to see other questions. You do not need to adhere to the questions listed if you find yourself going off on a tangent — the aim of these storytelling questions is to allow people to reflect and share experiences and memories, whatever they may be.

People generally answer about 3-4 questions and take about 3-7 minutes per question, but you are welcome to answer as many as you like and take whatever time you require.

music

If you’re feeling brave… create a tune. You’re pretty much in your own secluded sound-booth. It doesn’t matter if you don’t believe you have a good singing/ rapping/ beatboxing/ spoken word voice. This is an interaction with someone who doesn’t know you and an opportunity for you to engage in a creative process and create something unique together.

This installation can take as little or as long as you like depending on your participation.
